paradise,
with excellent ice-fishing for whitefish, walleye, and
northern pike. Groomed and signed snowmobile trails cover over 400 km and
connect with trails leading to other areas. Accommodation and fuel are readily
available. Dog sled touring is available from area lodges and outfitters as
either day trip or as an overnight excursion. Excellent groomed cross country
ski trail loops are maintained at several lodges, with rentals available.

Interpretive hiking trails
wind
through the ancient pine stands on Temagami Island. The Ferguson Trails in
Ferguson Bay area and the White Bear Forest hiking trail system in the Caribou
Mountain area provide varying degrees of challenge as well. The White Bear
Forest is an uncut forest containing stands of old growth red and white pine,
with its attendant ecosystem features. A series of looped trails provides
educational as well as inspirational hike, ranging from 2 to 6 hours, or
overnight if desired.

The Temagami Station
The Temagami
Station was built in 1907 by the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway, now
the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC), an Ontario Crown
Corporation. Two years later, the new stone station's interior was destroyed by
fire then reconstructed immediately. A freight building and an earlier wood
frame station, later used as a restaurant, shared the platform to the north,
next to a garden where 'TEMAGAMI' was spelled out with flowers. At the south
end of the platform, a second garden featured a small ornamental pond. Today
the stone station is all that remains.

Fishing on "the big lake"
and in
the myriad of smaller lakes rewards the angler with lake trout, pickerel
(walleye), smallmouth bass, pike and whitefish. Other lakes and streams provide
speckled, brook and rainbow trout. Volunteers operate the Temagami Area Fish
Involvement Program to ensure the population of these species is protected in
our waters for many future generations. The program was started in 1985. Visit
the hatchery on Lakeshore Dr., west of the Municipal Building.

Known as "Big Pine Country"
this
area boasts pristine lakes lined with old pine. The Obabika River contains
wetland communities famous among nature photographers for moose observation,
while the Wakimika Triangle is noted for old growth pine stands and hiking
trails. Running to the northwest is the Sturgeon River Waterway Park, with over
60 sets of rapids, providing early season canoeists with plenty of whitewater
fun! Completing the loop back to Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Park is the Solace
Waterway Park, with its classic flatwater paddling through pristine lakes.
